Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday and Syracuse University head basketball coach Jim Boeheim, the 2009 Know Your Score national spokesperson, will host the second annual Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer Celebrity Golf Tournament and Gala on Saturday, August 29, 2009, with proceeds to benefit the “Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer campaign and ZERO – the Project to End Prostate Cancer.”
The day begins at 8 a.m. with an 18-hole celebrity golf tournament at The Long Bay Club in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Each foursome will have the opportunity to have a celebrity from the sports and entertainment world.
Celebrities expected to join Boeheim include 2008 Honorary Chairperson Ken Griffey, Sr.; world renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis; Wes Matthews, a member of the 1986 and 1987 Los Angeles Lakers World Championship teams; TNT’s Emmy-Award-winning golf reporter Jim Huber; Sam Jones, one of the key members of the 1950s and 1960s Boston Celtics that won 10 NBA Championships during his 12 years; Frank Viola, a member of the 1987 World Champion Minnesota Twins; “Extreme Home Makeover” cast member Paul DiMeo; jazz musician Mike Phillips; ESPN billiards commentator and prostate cancer survivor Mitch Laurance; and Ewa Mataya Laurance, 2008 World Trick Shot champion and World 9-Ball champion.
Each golfer will receive a gift bag, lunch and drinks and prizes will be given to long drive and the closest-to-the pin winners. After golf, participants proceed to Kingston Plantation in Myrtle Beach for the gala with cocktails and a silent auction of sports memorabilia beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m.
“The ‘Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer’ campaign is a cause very near and dear to my heart as in 2001, I battled prostate cancer,” said Boeheim. “I am excited to serve as the campaign’s national spokesperson and host the celebrity golf tournament on August 29. I look forward to bringing a few of my celebrity friends to Myrtle Beach for golf and the gala to raise money for prostate cancer research.”
Golfers can purchase a foursome in the celebrity golf tournament with eight tickets to the gala with a $900 donation to the “Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer” campaign. Participants can register a foursome in the golf tournament for $400 or purchase a table of eight at the gala for $750. Individuals seeking to join the fight against prostate cancer can buy a single ticket to the golf tournament or the gala for $100 each. In April of 2008, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday joined forces with ZERO and launched the annual campaign to fight prostate cancer. The “Know Your Score” campaign slogan refers to the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test given to men 50 years of age or older to help detect prostate cancer. A low score on the PSA test is good news and is the best screening tool currently available when used with the physical prostate exam, according to Zero.
With the support of the entire Myrtle Beach golf community, more than $100,000 was raised in 2008 for prostate cancer research through closest-to-the-pin contests at area golf courses, a golf tournament and silent auction and fundraisers held at the PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship. Zero brought their 40-foot “Drive Against Prostate Cancer Mobile Screening RV” to Myrtle Beach twice in 2008 and provided free prostate screens, that normally cost $200 in a doctor’s office, to more than 750 men.

“Myrtle Beach is known as the ‘Golf Capital of the World’ and we see more than one million golfers per year here, most of which are the exact Zero demographic, men who are 45 years of age and older,” said Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. “The tournament and gala was very successful last year in raising money and we look forward to a great event on August 29.”
