You don't need a passport to experience a wee bit of Scotland. Built
with a Scottish feel and bearing the name of a 19th-century Scottish
golf society, the sensational new Thistle Golf Club offers golf in its
purest form, with wind-swept fairways, roling hillsides covered in
heather and wild flowers, and superb bentgrass greens.
Add to that a generous dose of the most attentive service and southern hospitality found in these parts, and its easy to see why Thistle Golf Club has quickly become one of the most sought after courses on the Grand Strand.
Instructions to course architect Tim Cate were to create a course that is ferocious, yet fair. Most are quick to confirm he hit the mark! The layout is visually stunning, and while there lies an abundance of water, the forced carries are fair and few. The course offers five sets of tees to assure an enjoyable round for all golfers. Thistle's turn-of-the-century clubhouse will house an impressive collection of 18th-century golf memorabilia, including artifacts from the ancient Scottish golf society from which Thistle takes its name.
This fall, returning golfers will be thrilled to discover that Thistle has recently opened a third nine, the South Course. It possesses a similar look and feel to the first two nines, but plays a bit longer and a good deal more challenging. The par-35 layout requires a few more forced-carries than the original 18, and offers several risk-reward situations.
One of the most imposing holes on the new course is the par-3 9th. From the Thistle (back) tees, this hole plays 214 yards across a small lake. The Redan-style green sits high above a stone wall with two deep pot-bunkers protecting the approach. From this vantage point, the course's highest elevation, you can look back across the entire complex.
