To truly experience the Myrtle Beach area’s diversity of great golf courses during your stay, check out some of the great signature designs by Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Jackson, Dan Maples and Robert Trent Jones. Myrtle Beach National is a fabulous 54-hole Arnold almer-design complex located off of Highway 501.

The King’s North Course at Myrtle Beach National has been ranked among the “100 Greatest Public Courses in America” and possesses some of the most incredible holes you’ll ever encounter. The par-5 sixth hole is nicknamed “The Gambler” because it offers several risk-reward options. The par-3 12th features an island green with “S” and “C” shaped bunkers that will have your knees knocking. And the 18th is one of the best fi nishing holes around. From the tee, the 18th is visually intimidating with 43 sand traps guarding the fairway and water protecting the right side of the green.

The other two courses at Myrtle Beach National, SouthCreek and The West Course, are a bit less demanding, but every bit as fun and always in pristine condition. SouthCreek is often onsidered the friendlier of the three and a fun course to walk. From the back tees, the West Course is a challenge for the best of players. All three courses feature bentgrass greens.

Just up Highway 17 is a course designed by one of the most celebrated architects in the history of American golf – Robert Trent Jones. Waterway Hills Golf Club features 27 holes, and the only way to get there is by taking an enclosed tram up and over the Intracoastal Waterway. It is one of the most unusual approaches in golf, and once you touch down, you’ll enjoy a peaceful day of great golf. There are no houses along these beautiful fairways, just you and nature.

Further to the north, near the North Carolina border, is another 27-hole layout worth checking out. Aberdeen Country Club is a Tom Jackson-design nestled against a protected area on the banks of the Waccamaw River. Each of the three nines is unique. One runs through an open meadow while another abuts a black-water swamp with beautiful moss-draped cypress trees. With 27 holes, you can often play an extra nine or eighteen at Aberdeen for a reduced rate, based on availability.

If you are a Jack Nicklaus fan, you’ll especially enjoy Long Bay Club, located on Highway 9 in North Myrtle Beach. They say a good measure of a great course lies in one’s ability to remember each hole at the end of the round. Long Bay Club is such a course. Each unforgettable hole is etched into your mind where you’ll recall practically every shot. Vast sandy waste areas, some doubling as cart paths, create a very dramatic character to this layout. Wide landing areas give long-hitters plenty of room off the tee, but the well-protected greens demand a confi dent short game.

All of the courses mentioned above offer multi-round specials throughout the year, and when booked together in the 4-round “Signature Package”, you’ll get a free bonus round with cart at no additional charge.

Treasures along the South Strand

The southern-most shores of the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand, from Murrells Inlet to Pawleys Island, are steeped in history, and today offer some of the top-ranked courses in America, along with an award-winning seaside resort called Litchfi eld Beach & Golf.

Where 18th century plantations once stood, today you’ll fi nd over a dozen pristine golf courses along a region designated as the Waccamaw Golf Trail, nestled along the saltwater marsh and tidal rivers, surrounded by giant moss-draped oak trees, azaleas, and camellias. Many bear the names of the plantations that once graced the area. Included among this incredible collection of golf courses are three exceptional layouts.

Willbrook Plantation Golf Club, designed by noted architect Dan Maples, sits upon the former site of two colonial plantations. There are numerous markers posted around the course depicting historic facts and points of interest where the old plantations once stood. Ancient oak trees and cypress stand as reminders of the how long ago this area was fi rst settled. Willbrook Plantation has earned national acclaim for its design, condition and service. Golf Digest has awarded Willbrook with 4 1⁄2 stars in its guide to the “Best Places to Play in America” and for the past six years Golf for Women Magazine has it ranked on their list of the “Top 50 in America.”

River Club at Litchfi eld is a demanding layout. An abundance of water and sand on this course reward accuracy and nerve. The A-1 Bent greens are consistently among the best on the Strand, but they can be fast, thus requiring a soft touch. The 15th is one of the best par-4s on the Grand Strand, requiring a well-placed drive and a confi dent second shot over water to a shallow green. River Club features one great hole after the next, with none more exciting and rewarding than the par-5 18th. With two brave carries over water, the green is reachable in two, providing an excellent chance for birdie or eagle.

A third course at Litchfi eld, Litchfi eld Country Club, maintains a private membership, but does accept a limited amount of play from vacationing golfers. Built in the early ‘60s, Litchfi eld is one of the oldest courses at the beach, and provides a unique country club atmosphere. The course is a classic Willard Byrd layout that rewards accuracy over distance, with several tree-lined dogleg par-4s that require well-placed tee shots.
