Barefoot
Resort and Golf’s popularity continues to skyrocket thanks to four award-winning courses designed by golf legends Greg Norman, Davis Love III, Tom Fazio and Pete Dye.
Besides accolades earned in nearly every top golf publication through the years, Barefoot
Resort’s 6,834-yard, par-71 Fazio Course is currently rated No. 96 and the 7,343-yard, par-72 Dye Course is No. 99 among Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses 2009-2010. Additionally, Barefoot’s 7,000-yard, par-72 Love Course (No. 1), Fazio Course (No. 6), Dye Course (No.10) and 7,200-yard, par-72 Norman Course (No. 28) were all among Golf Digest’s 2005 Top 50 Courses of Myrtle Beach ranking. But enough about accolades. Let’s get to the heart of the issue and talk about the four reasons they’ve received so many honors: The Courses.

The stretch extending from North Carolina’s Sunset Beach south to the charming, Lowcountry town of Pawley’s Island, affectionately referred to as the Grand Strand by those who love golf and even by those who don’t, contains more than 100 championship golf courses. Since 1966, Golf Digest’s biennial rankings of America’s greatest golf courses have become a standard by which the best “Places to Play” are measured.
In the most recent edition of the publication’s “100 Greatest Public Courses,” seven courses in and around Myrtle Beach made the cut, and many others just missed out. Stop anywhere along the length of the Strand, and we’re sure you’ll find a suitable 4-Star course to sample. But booking a truly first-class golf vacation goes well beyond just finding the perfect place to play.

They can often be found nimbly dangling from the neck of a Southern woman occupying a place in high society. A frequently uttered adage connects them to sage words of advice. Objects of beauty and valued gemstones, their shine and luster are unmistakable, especially when formed naturally at sea. Their appearance provokes thoughts of excellence, class and charm.
In accordance with its namesake, the 36-hole golf facility found at the northern edge of the Grand Strand known simply as The Pearl is also a rare find and highlyregarded gem. Located in the tiny, coastal North Carolina town of Calabash that modestly refers to itself as the “Seafood Capital of the World,” the golf club occupies a pristine setting, is consistently kept in championship condition and has been well-received by golf’s most esteemed publications.

By the time he finished his postgraduate work at the Harvard School of Design, Rees Jones was programmed to be a golf course architect. After all, he watched his dad, the legendary designer Robert Trent Jones, transform undefined patches of land into picturesque golf venues for the better part of his formative years.
Rees’ own legacy is likely to revolve around his virtuoso work breathing new life into sites of the United State Golf Association’s premier tournament – the men’s U.S. Open. It was Rees who beefed up Bethpage Black and put the teeth into Torrey Pines South before each welcomed the world’s best players.

The King Reigns Supreme at the 1996 Opening of King’s North
Arnold Palmer recently celebrated his 80th birthday, and photos and tales of his career graced the covers and pages of every golf magazine in America. Like so many people and places, Myrtle Beach, S.C. has been blessed to have hosted several Palmer sightings, including several appearances at Senior Tour Championship and a special guest appearance at the 50th Annual Golf Writers Dinner in 2003. Among his greatest gifts to Myrtle Beach are the three Arnold Palmer signature courses at Myrtle Beach National, located on Highway 501 between Myrtle Beach and Conway.
In the 1970’s Palmer and design partner Francis Duane were contracted to carve three 18-hole courses from a Carolina pine forest. They were simply regarded as the North, South and West Courses. Similar in many ways, yet different enough that everyone had their favorite, these three courses thrilled thousands of golfers each spring and fall, and literally launched the boom of golf course development along the Grand Strand.

When Jack Davis assumed ownership of the International Club
in Murrells Inlet in April 2006, he concurrently announced that his aim was a
higher standard of excellence at the course that had been designed by the late
Willard Byrd and opened at the turn of the century.
"We believe this course was built for golfers, period,"
Davis stated in 2006. "We want to make it one of the best places in Myrtle
Beach to play. Being a golfer myself, I guarantee you will have a wonderful

No one will argue the fact that the Myrtle Beach area’s number one summer attraction is the beach. It’s regarded as the top family beach in America. Shopping and dining are popular pastimes and the family amusement parks and water parks rank pretty highly as well. But don’t overlook the growing popularity of summer golf. Last summer, between June and August, nearly a million rounds of golf were recorded on Myrtle Beach area courses.
It used to be that summer golf was an activity where dad slipped away in the early morning and got back around lunch time before he was missed. While that is still a popular strategy for many, there is a noticeable increase in the number of dads, moms and kids who are heading to the courses as a family. No place makes it easier to do so than Myrtle Beach.

For even the most seasoned golf course architect, restoring a historically significant layout is a formidable challenge, commensurate to the task a musician undertakes when recording a classic song. The finished product has to strike a delicate balance somewhere between paying homage to the original work and forging a distinct path in order to resonate with a more current audience, as well as preserve the integrity and character established many years ago.
The new Pine
Lakes Country Club does just that, reminding long-time Myrtle Beach regulars just how brilliant Robert White’s initial course concept was and moving the “Granddaddy” into a new era so that it can remain relevant in the supercompetitive Myrtle Beach golf scene.

Adownswing with an “inside” club path and powerful wrist/hand/arm release with a balanced body rotation, produces best ball-striking results. Club speed, solid contact and consistency are achieved. The key is to start the downswing with a smooth weight-shift lateral
turn of the front hip, establishing a planted stable front foot and
braced front leg; and at the same time, the hands/arms smoothly find
the “power slot” (right elbow returns to body), to release clubhead on
an inside path through impact. Both shoulders are quiet to achieve this
“Magic Move” that famous Golf Instructor Harvey Penick described in his
1992 Little Red Book.
If the shoulders charge out of position, it takes
the hands outside with body ahead of the arms, and the power slot is
not attainable. Planted front foot & elbow to the side is the move.

O' War, The
Wizard and The
Witch have garnered a well-earned reputation as three of Myrtle Beach's most memorable plays, thanks to their exciting designs and superb year-round conditioning.

The thousands of visitors who come to the Sea
Trail Golf Resort and Conference Center are already well aware of the many amenities that come with a reservation at one of the more exclusive locations in the Myrtle Beach area. Topping that list might be the seclusion of Sunset Beach, just 15 minutes from the pulsating excitement of the Grand Strand. The variety of villas, the menu of recreational activities and the conference facilities are second to none on the North Carolina coast.
But despite awards like “America’s Best Residential Courses of Distinction” from Golfweek, somehow, the best amenity of all is occasionally overshadowed. Three signature golf courses are located within three miles of breathtaking Sunset Beach itself, designed by three distinctively different architects renowned around the world. And all three were just ranked in Golf Digest’s “Top 50 Courses in Myrtle Beach.”
